The Version1 and Cxmmunity program is specifically designed for Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students who are passionate about pursuing a career in the esports or gaming industry. Version1’s goal is to introduce more students to the various career possibilities that include and go beyond competing or content creation.  

Version1 is offering academic scholarships, staff-to-student mentorship and game day staff opportunities.

VERSION1’S HBCU ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP

Version1 is committed to increasing the representation of minorities and marginalized individuals in the gaming industry. 

In 2021, Version1 will award four, $5,000 academic scholarships to college freshmen and sophomores attending a HBCU institution during the 2021-2022 academic year. 

By cultivating future generations of skilled workforces, it’s possible to add new avenues to careers in gaming that are accessible to, and safe for, all. The ideal candidate for a Version1 scholarship is passionate about gaming and interested in pursuing an esports or gaming career across a variety of disciplines. Applicants are not required to be affiliated with Cxmmunity.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  • Students eligible to apply for a Version1 academic scholarship are/will be a freshman or sophomore during the 2021-2022 academic year.  
  • Scholarship recipients must be attending and/or taking classes at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) during the 2021-2022 academic year. Eligible candidates will have a 2.0 GPA or higher on their most recent academic report card.
  • Eligible candidates are required to submit an additional example of their work that demonstrates a passion for gaming and/or illustrate how the skills, training, and knowledge gained in college may contribute to a career related to esports and gaming.

WHEN IS V1 ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS?

Version1 is accepting applications for this scholarship starting at 12:00AM CT Tuesday, August 17, 2021 until 11:59PM CT on Thursday, October 14, 2021.  

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO APPLY?

Interested candidates should fill out the online application form AND submit one additional piece of documentation that demonstrates eligibility for this scholarship. This additional documentation can be any one or more item(s) of the following: 

  • A 500-word essay that explains why candidate is best-suited to receive a V1 scholarship  
  • A digital file of their portfolio or CV that includes 2-5 examples of visual art relevant to candidate’s career aspirations 
  • A video candidate shot, edited and/or produced that illustrates candidate’s creative approach (videos must be 30 seconds minimum; 1 minute maximum)  

HOW ARE RECIPIENTS BEING SELECTED?

Cxmmunity’s scholarship advisory board will review applications and all supporting materials and determine who to award scholarships to. Scholarship recipients will be notified via the contact information provided on their scholarship application form in October 2021.   

WHEN WILL RECIPIENTS BE NOTIFIED IF THEY RECEIVED THE SCHOLARSHIP OR NOT?

Version1 and Cxmmunity will notify applicants selected to receive a scholarship in October 2021. NOTE: recipients will be notified via the contact information provided on their scholarship application form.
