Minnesota Røkkr exits Championship Sunday with loss to Toronto Ultra

Røkkr came in hot having won three of their past four matches against top teams Optic and Empire, but they couldn’t pull off a win against their northern rival from Toronto. With the 3-1 loss Rokkr exits the Stage 2 Major in 4th place, a disappointing end to the weekend but a significant improvement over Stage 1.

The 4th place finish earned the team 40 points in the CDL standings and $40,000 in prize money.

Map 1: Raid Hardpoint
Røkkr came out strong in the opening map, consistently holding a 40+ point lead for most of the map. With a 140-104 lead after the first set of rotations, Røkkr had full control of P1 to extend the lead to 194-104. Toronto made it interesting but several strong plays by Priestahh in P3 brought Røkkr 11 points from the win heading into P4. In a last gasp Toronto controlled P5 with Røkkr stuck at 249, before Accuracy eliminated Bance and Standy broke through to earn the final point and secure the 250-219 win.  Priestahh lead the way for Røkkr at 24/19 and 1:46 of hill time, and notched several key kills to maintain control of the map for his team.

Map 2: Express Search and Destroy
For the second straight day Røkkr struggled on Express for Search and Destroy. Toronto steadily built a 5-2 lead before Røkkr won two straight rounds. Heading into round 10 up 5-4, Ultra opened with a quick move to the B site to plant the bomb, and as Røkkr moved toward the area Insight read their path perfectly to take out both Attach and Standy and win the round 6-4.

Map 3: Raid Control
The teams traded wins for four rounds, with each taking their two defensive rounds. In the tiebreaking round 5 Røkk was in the preferred position on defense. Ultra opened with a push towards the B point, securing some progress before focusing on the A point. After the A point was secured Toronto had 1:50 remaining to secure the B point. Røkkr played strong defense, but with 18 seconds remaining Ultra closed in and came out with enough trades to get the time needed and win the map.

Map 4: Garrison Hardpoint
Map 4 opened in back and forth fashion, with the teams trading control of each point in the first set of rotations. Røkkr controlled P5 to pull out to a 119-76 lead. Then Ultra took control, outscoring Rokkr 99-0 on the next two hardpoints and using streaks to break Røkkr’s hold on P3. At that point the result was never in doubt as Ultra continued to build on the lead eventually winning 250-155 and ending Røkkr’s run at the Stage 2 Major.
